My Designer Statement
As a commercial and teaching artist, I’m not often able to create personal pieces, yet there are elements and influences which exhibit themselves within all sectors of my work. Heavily influenced by Gordon Parks, M.C. Escher, Paul Rand, and Ava DuVernay as of late; I tend to have an affinity for clean, high contrast thought-provoking aesthetics. Through my commercial work, this translates into a specialization in brand psychology lead brand identities and campaigns. While my personal work tends to blend these aesthetic elements together with themes of African American history and culture, social issues, and women’s empowerment.
From an early age, I loved drawing and showed promise with exploration in color tonalities and abstract representation. Growing as an artist this developed into a love of shapes, placement, layout, and hierarchy. In witnessing the world become a digital society, my path as a graphic designer became clear.
I aim for my work as a designer to exude professionalism and opinion-altering dynamics. This is indicative of our industry as far back as Bauhaus, Futurism, and Dada. My personal mantra applied in all areas of my artistry as a designer and design educator is to always press on, inspire betterment, push the concept, and know my craft.
